Chromic Acid Anodize for Tight-Tolerance Parts
One of the biggest advantages of type I anodizing is how thin the anodize coating is. Type II and type III processes may add 0.0005 to 0.002 inches or more to part surfaces. In comparison, chromic acid coatings can be as thin as 0.00002 inches.
This layer provides excellent characteristics such as:
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- Low coating weight
- Excellent paint adhesion
Chromic acid anodize is comparable to sulfuric acid anodize in corrosion resistance but at a much lower coating weight.
Applications That Use Chromic Acid Anodizing
Type I anodizing is only available as a clear oxide layer. This makes it primarily useful for technical applications uses include:
- Precision aircraft components
- Rocket propulsion systems
- Satellite systems
- Complex mechanical systems for manufacturing processes
- Defense industry technology with propellants or explosives
